In the time of plenty

This is the first smallmouth of the 2013 summer season.  Ain't he cute!
Today I started my 2013 summer smallmouth season with a trip for my friends at the Big K.  I had the pleasure of fishing with Ray (pictured above with our first smalley of the new year) and Randall (pictured above).

Most of the bass came to top water, "Fluke" style soft plastics.  Just think of what a salmon or steelhead smolt would look like in the water and you'll get the idea of what "fluke" lures look and act like in the water.  The Umpqua is still a little too high and little too cool for effective fly fishing so we fished the soft plastics and had a great day!

An osprey coming in for a little lunch!

It was so nice to be back out after smallmouth after so many months.   This fishery is just beginning and will last through the end of summer.  If you've never fished for smallmouth your really missing out on one of the best fishery's Oregon has to offer.
